Extra Information
Lake Wanaka is one of the loveliest in the south island.
Its name was formerly Oanaka, (place of Anaka) the name of a early Maori
Chief. Early settlers called the town Pembroke.
The lake is 43 km long, stands 277m above sea level and is about 300m deep,
its bed being below sea level.
Both lakes Wanaka and Hawea occupy basins excavated by successive advances
of great glacial systems 20,000 years.
